Afghanistan |
I see minarets, flags, crossed swords, maybe some human figures, but no rail vehicle on this stamp, but I thought it interesting enough to show.
From Rinbad - http://www.rinbad.free-online.co.uk/2002.txt (Is this the railway?)
Afghanistan: minor railways: (R.1734, 1869) During the reign of king Amanullah of Afghanistan (1919-29) a roadside tramway was built from Kabul south-west 14km to Darulaman, and operated by two Henschel steam locomotives. The line was short-lived, closing when the king was exiled, but the locomotives survived, being reported stored indoors at Darulaman in 1974 and later still outdoors.

Diesel Locomotive, Passenger Unit & Passenger Car at M'raier Oasis |
There are over two hundred Algerian Railway Parcel stamps, but all have the same five or so basic designs, reprinted and overprinted many times with new values. The early designs were just simple text. Later ones, starting 1943, show scenes in Algeria. These are the only two designs that actually show a train. The others are Railway stations and scenery. Many varieties exist. All are listed in Yvert & Tellier, and in the ATA Handbook.

Railway stamps from Argentina - for parcels?
The first stamp is supposed to be relatively common, but I have seen few.
Second stamp - Ferrocarril Central Norte: 1875 - 1888
History
http://www.ferroclub.org.ar/Lynch/Lynch/Historia/Historia.htm
This stamp has a winged wheel, which means mail by rail (NO - see below).
There were many railroads in Argentina once, so there could be many railway stamps from their operations.
1/14/2005 - Bill Weinberger:
These are all
Railway Telegraph stamps and not parcels. The full listing is in
Telegraph and Telephone Stamps of the World by Dr. S. E. R. Hiscocks.
Some show trains and others not. They are also in The Argentine specialized catalog and I think without
looking up in Yvert. The first two stamps are common the third rather scarce. The comment about the winged wheel is really not true in all cases-- if the wheel has a flange OK --
if not then it merely has to be connected in some way to a rail.
australia |
Australia had many railways, some pre-federation (1901),
and most of those railways produced parcel stamps, some
with fine train images.
The earliest ones are from as far back as the 1870's.
There are many excellent books on the topic, though I do not own any.

VR - VICTORIA
There are many distinct shades in the "VR" issues --
Not a big surprise, as the stamps were issued from 1887-1922.
The ½d is a scarce stamp - note smaller size.
(Scans for this group are all to the same scale)
The VR set Occurs Perf (common) and Roulette (quite scarce).
The rouletted set is up to the 6d only, and the 2d, while listed,
has
not been seen by anyone I know, including the leading specialist in SA.

The GR set was issued 1923 and the 1/ is supposed to exist in 7 recorded copies -- someone else less reliable told me 12.
