Unofficial envelope issued in 1981 by The Romanian Philatelists Association (Vrancea and Buzau branches), on the occasion of Moldomax '81 (philatelic exhibition) and of 100 years since the inauguration of the Buzau-Ramnicu Sarat-Focsani-Marasesti line. Cachet showing a drawing of Marasesti station in 1881 and the line's scheme. Stamp showing Marasesti Mausoleum (dedicated to those who died here in WWI). Round pictorial cancel showing a locomotive used to tow trains on this line. Total issued unknown.

 
1985

A set of 6 envelopes issued in 1985, to celebrate 125 years since the opening of Cernavoda-Constanta railway.

1. (Cod 110/85) - cachet showing Constanta Oras station (1900); 2Lei imprinted indicium showing front profile of early steam loco.
2. (111/85) - cachet showing a side view of early two-axled second class passenger carriage (built by Wright & Sons Birmingham works); 2Lei indicium with endwise profile of early carriage.
3. (112/85) - cachet showing a side view of a two-axled first class passenger carriage; same indicium as #111
4. (113/85) - cachet showing a two-axled third class carriage; same indicium as #111
5. (114/85) - cachet showing a two-axled baggage/guard van; 2Lei indicium with endwise profile of early baggage car.
6. (115/85) - cachet showing a side view of "Ovidiu" early steam loco (type 0-6-0; built by Beyer-Peacock in 1860); same indicium as #110

An unofficial postcard issued in Cluj on 07.09.1990 to celebrate 120th anniversary of railroad in Cluj. The picture shows a 4000 hp diesel loco built in 1978 at Electroputere works (all scrapped now). Stamp from a 6 values series issued in 1987, showing the same loco type. Pictorial cancel for the occasion.

Unofficial postcard issued in Cluj on 07.09.1990 to celebrate 120 years since the opening of Cluj railway station. Picture showing a 1250 hp diesel loco built by Bucharest locomotive factory in 1970. Stamp from the same series as the one on the last postcard, showing a 1250 hp diesel-electric loco built especially for Oravita- Anina line. Pictorial cancel for the occasion.

A two postcard set issued in Cluj also on 07.09.1990, celebrating 120 years from the opening of Cluj-Oradea railway.

First card shows a 700 hp diesel loco built at Bucharest works in 1964 and used for train shunting.

Second postcard shows a 450 hp narrow gauge diesel loco built also in 1964 at Bucharest works. This type is still used in limited numbers mainly on industrial narrow gauge lines (few are still open). The last passenger narrow gauge train was taken out of service in 2001. It was running on the narrow line between Sibiu and Agnita. There are also some narrow gauge steam locos preserved for tourist rides.

10/30/1994

Two official envelopes issued in 1994 to celebrate 125 years from the opening of the first Romanian railway (Bucuresti Filaret-Giurgiu) and from the beginning of the Romanian railway administration.

The first envelope (Cod 126/94) has a 60 Lei indicium showing a steam loco that worked on the line. Cachet showing an image of Filaret station in 1873. Additional 90Lei stamp on envelope issued in 1994 on the same occasion. Round pictorial cancel from the anniversary train showing "Calugareni" steam loco (the oldest Romanian steam loco still surviving). The loco is now fully restored and used for tourist trains.

Envelope #2 (Cod 128/94) with the same indicium. Cachet showing the passenger boarding area at Giurgiu-Ramadan station. Same special round pictorial cancel.

According to the ATA HB-138 list, the whole set consists of 4 envelopes, but I have only these two.

 
1995

An envelope from a 3 piece set issued in 1995 on the occasion of Cernavoda railway bridge centenary - (Cod 073/95) with 60Lei indicium showing a statue of soldier at bridge portal; Cachet showing a steam train passing trough the bridge's eastern portal (1915).

 
11/01/1996

Unofficial envelope issued in Resita to celebrate 140 years since the inauguration of the first railway on Romanian territory. The Cachet represents an earth globe showing inside it the line's route. Under the globe is a banner saying 140 YEARS FROM THE INAUGURATION OF THE FIRST ROMANIAN RAILWAY ORAVITA - BAZIAS and the image of a steam loco that ran on this line. The envelope was issued by Resita Machine Plant and Caras- Severin Philatelic Association. The total number of issued envelopes was 300 (mine is #215).

This and the Resita envelope below were made by someone from the Caras-Severin philatelic Association.

Unofficial envelope issued in Resita to celebrate 125 years since the inauguration of CALNIC-GATAIA-VOITENI railway line. The cachet shows an image of RESITA NORD railway station. The indicium shows a locomotive drawing. The total number of issued envelopes was 100 (mine is #52).

 
2001 - #1 of 16

16-postcard set issued in Timisoara in 2001.

Card 1 represents a diesel-electric 1250 hp engine (number 69-0014-8). The loco was made in 1979 at Bucharest Locomotive Works and designed to tow passenger and freight trains on mountain railways with curves on less than 100 m radius. It can reach a top speed of 100 km/h. The picture was made in 1995 in Timisoara-Nord station.

 
2001 - #2 of 16

Card 2 shows a 2100 hp diesel loco currently used on CFR network. The loco's number is 62-1268-2 (meaning that is a class 62 loco, number 1258, 2 being a control digit). Class 62 is actually a 2100 hp diesel loco which was modified in order to reach maximum speeds of 120 km/h. It is used to tow passenger trains on secondary un-electrified lines. The pictured loco was built in 1978 at ELECTROPUTERE Craiova factory and it belongs to Timisoara depot.

 
2001 - #3 of 16

Card 3 shows steam loco 131.045 built at Resita in 1941. This class of locomotive was used to pull passenger and freight trains on secondary lines. It could reach a top speed of 65 km/h. The loco is now active for tourist trains and belongs to Timisoara depot. Picture made in 1984 in Titu station (the loco was pulling a special train on the occasion of the centenary of Targoviste- Titu railway).

 
2001 - #4 of 16

Card 4 shows a special rack railway locomotive built in 1908 at Florisdorf factory (in Austria) and used to pull trains on Subcetate-Boutari rack line (50% incline). The loco could reach a top speed of 40 km/h, but on the rack line it traveled 12 km/h. Picture made in Subcetate loco shed in 1998.

 
2001 - #5 of 16

Card 5 shows a Romanian prototype loco (151.002). There where only two units built in 1939- 1940 at Malaxa Works in Bucharest. The loco 151.001 was exhibited at the International Fair in Milan in 1939. In 1945 it was taken by the Russian army and was destroyed in a boiler blowup near Kharkow. Loco 151.002 was used till 1970 and now is an exhibit in Dej depot. The image was made in Razboieni shed in 1989

Card 6 is a general view of Timisoara depot which was set up in 1857. Picture made in 1995.

Card 7 shows a train in Timisoara Nord station. Built in 1857, it was rebuilt in 1897; then destroyed by US air strikes in 1944 and rebuilt again between 1947-48. Modified between 1971-1976 to its current form. Picture made on first platform, in 1995.

Card 8 shows CFR's "Nostalgia" steam train coming out of Garliste tunnel (660 m. long ) on Oravita-Anina line. The loco 50.065 was built in 1921 at StEG plant in Vienna. It could reach a top speed of 50 km/h.

Card 9 shows 150.105 steam loco currently exhibited in Dej railway depot. The loco is actually the 1000'th loco made in Resita factory in 1955.

Card 10 shows the "Nostalgia" steam train in Anina station, in 1993.

Card 11 shows loco 142.015 (now scrapped) in 1972. The loco was built at Malaxa Works in 1938 and was used to pull express passenger trains (top speed 110 km/h).

Card 12 shows loco 230.142 from Timisoara depot pulling "Nostalgia" steam train. Picture made in 1993 at Resita-Sud shed. Loco built in 1933 at Resita Works and used to pull passenger and mixed trains on CFR main lines (top speed 100 km/h).

Card 13 shows loco 130.525 at Fetesti Depot in 1988. The loco was built in 1921 at Skoda works and is now preserved in Fetesti. It was used to pull passenger trains on plain lines (top speed 90 km/h).

Card 14 shows modern 700 hp diesel loco from Timisoara depot. Loco built in 1964 at Bucharest Locomotive Factory. Picture made in 1995.

 
2001 - #15 of 16

Card 15 shows a modern 5100 kw electric loco departing from Timisoara with an IC train. Loco built in 1972 at Electroputere works (top speed 160 km/h). This type is the CFR's main current electric loco.

Card 16 shows loco 231.065 (Pacific type) in Buzau depot, in 1989. Built by Maffei works in Munich, the loco was the fastest one that ran on CFR lines (126 km/h top speed). It is now fully restored and used to pull tourist steam trains. Now it belongs to Sibiu depot.

Unofficial envelope issued in Caransebes on 23.10.2001, celebrating 125 years since the inauguration of TIMISOARA-LUGOJ-CARANSEBES railway. Cachet showing a 3400 kw electric loco.

A set of two unofficial envelopes issued at Oravita, celebrating 145 years from the inauguration of ORAVITA-BAZIAS railway. Stamps not rail related. Cachet on the first envelope shows an image of Oravita station in 1911. The second Cachet shows the drawing of a train that ran on the line. Total issued unknown.

Another unofficial envelope issued in Brasov, on 19.08.2002, celebrating 40 years from the inauguration of the actual railway station building. Cachet showing an image of Brasov rail station. Text saying: ON AUGUST 19 1962 THE ACTUAL PASSENGER BUILDING OF BRASOV RAILWAY STATION WAS INAUGURATED. Stamps not rail related. Total issued: 100 envelopes.

This envelope and the one below from Brasov were issued by an engineer who works at CFR Regional Office and organized the two celebrations. The envelopes where issued in small numbers only to serve as a gift for the people that where invited to those festivities.

Unofficial PC issued in Resita on 29.09.2002. Card printed by Timisoara Railway Philatelic Group. Image showing 150.105 steam loco currently exhibited in Dej railway depot. The loco is actually the 1000'th loco made in Resita factory in 1955.

Stamp on face showing loco 150.211 which is now scrapped. Stamp part of a 6 value series issued in 1979 on the occasion of IVA 79 International Railway Exhibition.

The round pictorial cancel is actually an official postal one issued to celebrate the first day of postal circulation of a 7 postcard series picturing steam locos from Resita museum.

Unofficial envelope issued in Brasov on 1.06.2003 to celebrate 130 years from the inauguration of SIGHISOARA-BRASOV line and the entering of the first train in Brasov station. Cachet showing an image with Brasov's old railway station (bombed in 1944 by US air-force). Stamp showing a Romanian steam loco. 70 envelopes issued.
