Env - 1987 - 5k red ind with transport vehicles, including railway mailcar; cachet shows Train Station in Sochi

150th anniv of Sochi (?) Most Internet sites I consulted gave the date of the founding of Sochi as 1896 or 1898, so the 1837 date is a mystery. I found one site (no longer available) with extensive historical information, but in Russian. Mine is minimal, but I think it said a military fort was established in the area around 1837, so that may be the basis for the calculation of 150 years.

Wikipedia gives 1838 as the date the city was founded. Close enough.

Originally Tsaritsyn (1589), then Stalingrad(1925), now Volgograd (1961), it is one of the oldest cities of Russia. Located about 600 miles southeast of Moscow, it has a current population of about 1 million. The Nazi siege and destruction of the city in WWII was a turning point in the war on the Russian front.

Env - 1988 - 5k blue ind with transport vehicles, including railway mailcar; cachet shows monument to railroad workers in Irkutsk, Siberia, on south-western shore of Lake Baikal.

With an average depth of over 2,000 feet, Lake Baikal is the worlds' deepest lake, and contains one-fifth of the world's fresh water.

Irkutsk, with a population of about 600,000, is one of the chief cities on the Trans-Siberian Railroad.

About that monument ( photo here) - quoting from this page

In 1900 the Irkutsk City Duma (Congress) passed a resolution to mark the end of the Siberian railroad construction by putting up a monument to Alexander III. In 1903 the monument's foundation was laid, and it was unveiled in 1908. The monument project belonged to a sculptor P.P.Bakh, who won an art competition, organized by the City Duma in 1902. The pedestal is made of polished red Finish granite. The original monument was topped with a bronze figure (5,3 meters tall) of the Tsar, cast in St.Petersburg. The monument pedestal was decorated by high relief portrayals of Siberian conqueror Ermak, General-Governors M.M.Speranskii and N.N.Muravyov-Amurskii. On the eastern side there is a bronze double-headed eagle, holding the Tsar's edict about the Siberian railroad construction. All townspeople participated in the project: some donated money, others took part directly in the preparation of the ground and square around the monument. In 1920 the Tsar's figure was removed and destroyed, and the pedestal was empty for a long time. In 1964 an obelisk, designed by architect V.P.Shmatkov, was added. Nowadays there are some talks about restoration of the monument to its original view.

Env - 1989 - 5k blue ind with transport vehicles, including railway mailcar; cachet shows Chernivtsi train station

Located in western Ukraine, near the Carpathian Mountains, Chernivtsi has a current population of about 260,000. Like the rest of western Ukraine, Chernivtsi is both more European and more Ukrainian than the eastern part of the country - from 1774-1918 it was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and from 1918-1940 the region was part of Romania. Only from 1940 to 1990 was it under Russian authority. Hence its architecture and culture are more European in flavor than, say Kyiv.
