2015 is the centennial of the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in
San Francisco,
and the SF Bay Area is celebrating in a big way -
go to
PPIE100.org to follow all the exhibits and events that have been organized.
There are many web sites commemorating the PPIE, but none so far
specializing in the poster stamps issued for the fair, so these pages will
attempt to fill that gap, though not exhaustively: Nick Follansbee has compiled
a catalog of the topic, and my accumulation of images covers perhaps a quarter
of his findings. But this should give you a good idea of the range and variety
of PPIE poster stamps issued.
=============
Poster stamps were at the peak of their popularity in the US in 1915,
so in
addition to the stamps issued by the promoters of the fair, there were stamps
issued by exhibitors at the
fair to promote their exhibits, and mentioning the PPIE.
In addition, many exhibitors handed out poster stamps they had issued
earlier, some
of which are dated 1915, but make no mention of the fair.
I have chosen to show only items that mention the PPIE,
or that I know were issued in a sheet with other stamps that say PPIE.
I have sorted the stamps into categories that make sense to me, but other
divisions
are possible. Click on one of the categories listed at the top left side of any
page to see
the stamps in that group.
About half the images on these pages are scans of items I own or used
to own
(I sold
most of my collection on eBay last year).
About a quarter of the images are from eBay and other sources on the www.
The remainder were supplied by Steven Greiczek, co-editor of the
The Dated Event Poster Stamps
(DEPS) database.
Thanks to all my sources.
