Ido - and Tobler Chocolates
Ido promotion stamps, 1911
Ido was an offshoot of Esperanto created in 1907 by Esperanto supporters who
wanted to reform the language but could not
convince their fellow Esperantists to agree.
FULL
STORY HERE. It had a brief period
of popularity, but was essentially dead by the end of WWI. Its symbol was a
six-pointed star.
Tobler poster stamps in Ido, 1920's
I have seen promotion poster stamps for Ido, but none for events or products,
with one exception:
One of Ido's most active supporters was
Theodor Tobler, founder and owner of Tobler Chocolates. The company
distributed poster stamps with its products in the nineteen-teens and twenties
- there were scores of sets of 12 each
on popular topics like
Wagner operas,
Astronomy,
Scouting,
Globe-trotting,
Flowers,
Butterflies,
Popular characters from
fiction,
Aviation,
Ancient Egypt,
American Indians,
The Four Elements
- and many others.
I have seen only two languages on the sets - Ido and
English. SO even then
the future of English as the international language was clear.
