SOKOL POSTCARDS
1898
(Click on any image to view an enlarged version)
Above, two similar cards with photo-images of Sokol athletes, one with message dated 1898,
the other unused, but clearly from the same source and date.
The handwritten message on the first card says something like
Below, postcard sent from Osecna to Semily on 7.7.98, with receiving handstamp on the next
day, with vignette showing statue of Jindrich Fügner in the Prague Sokol gymnasium.
Below, undivided correspondence card, with predominant Czech language printing, bearing
vignette of the COS Medal, posted from Chocen to Semily on 7.1.98 and bearing arrival handstamp of
the next day. Straight-line cachet of the town's local office.
Štefan Šuták informs me that the messages on the two postcards above
are "requests to send hectograph mass (gelatin) and ink." I had never even heard of a
hectograph -
DETAILS HERE. Since both cards are addressed to the same company, I suppose it
makes sense they have the same subject. See more cards to that firm, and the same
requests, on the pages for 1899 and 1900.
