SOKOL POSTCARDS
and Poster Stamps

1929

(Click on any image to view an enlarged version)

1929 was another very active year!

Postcard with a painting by the artist Karel Šimůnek, produced for the 1910 regional Slet of the Catholic Eagles (Katolicky Orel) held in Kromeriz, described as "Homage to One's Country" and reproduced for the meeting held in Prague by the Eagles on St. Wencelas' Day in 1929. (Printer: Unie, Prague, No. I, H series.)
Note the similarity of this card to the one at the bottom of the 1923 page.

Sokol trip to Plzeň (Pilsen)

Zájezd Československé obce Sokolske do Pilzné
Sokol Trip to the Czechoslovak village Pilsen

I was puzzled by these items - What's the big deal about a trip to Pilsen?
Was this just one village visiting another? Was it a Slet?
How did it merit a special poster stamp, and multiple postcards (yes, there are others)?
After considerable Googling I found THIS PAGE, conveniently translated into excellent English, and all was made clear:
This was a major event that attracted tens of thousands, and for which a huge temporary(!) stadium was constructed!

The grand social event connected with a ceremonial parade through the city and a number of other accompanying events were recorded on a filmstrip and a number of photographs. The show, which presented the exercise of girls and boys, women and men, culminated in an allegorical scene to ancient motifs, The Winner's Mother, which intensified the highly theatrical character of the festivities. As was customary, the event was also attended by many notable figures, including the Czechoslovak president and devout member of the Sokol movement, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk.

As stated in that quote, it was all recorded on film! CLICK HERE to view it, and if you have never seen a Slet or other large Sokol exhibition, prepare to be astounded.

Here is Google's slightly awkward, but still interesting translation of the history of Stránčice Sokol.

On the left, membership stamps for all four quarters of 1929,

On the back of that card, ŽELEZNIČNÍ KOLEK designates a railway revenue stamp (a member of Sokol gets a discount on the railway fare on her way to a slet).

VII Slet, Poznan, Poland

Sokol in Poland was a vigorous offshoot of the Czech version, which participated in the large, all-Sokol Slets, but was otherwise separate and distinct in its operation and philosophy.
