SOKOL POSTCARDS
and Poster Stamps

1909

6/17/2020 - Our compatriot Štefan Šuták of Czechia sent the images above, of a Sokol membership card dated 1909.
"Member 570, Brother Josef Holaček, a gardener"
He was member of the Sokol gym unit in Prostějov
starting August 4, 1909. But it appears he did not remain active,
as there are no records of dues paid on the other side!

Above, unused postcard with vignette of the Silver Challenge Shield with text: "No gain! No celebration!" The shield was awarded to the "Triumphant" winners of the international gymnastic competition held in London in 1910, which was sponsored bv the British National Physical Recreation Society. Patron: H.M. King Edward VII, President: Rt. Hon. Viscount Gladstone. The shield was won by the Prague Sokols with a French team second and a Dundonian team from Scotland, third. This shield was later bought by the London Sokols and was presented to the COS on 25th May 1925, on the day of the official opening of the Tyrš house in Prague, where it is still exhibited.

Below, postcard with allegorical theme and text "Hold to your kind" in eight Slavic languages. Posted from Warnsdorf on 1.4.10, to a correspondent in Sobeslav.

First Slet in Pazin, Croatia, honoring Dinko Vitezic, a national hero.

Below, an interesting group of cards showing a series of "human towers" demonstrated by the Sokols of Zizkove. All have the same title, "Svetlonosi", which according to an online dictionary translates "light-bearer" or "attendant," neither of which seems an appropriate description. These are the only images of such demonstrations I have seen, which suggests they may have been unique to this club, rather than standard displays.

These are not true "human towers," of course, since some sort of wooden or metal support is being used.
The area around Barcelona, Spain (Catalonia) is famous for its true human tower competitions -

Orej. Mati orej.

The words are from a very dramatic Sokol song.

Bulgarian Yunak card, for the 5th Yunak Assembly in Sofia, June 27-29, 1910.

The Bulgarian athletic/patriotic organization was called
Yunak = Hero, and developed separately from Sokol,
but shared many of the same ideals, and Yunaks competed in Czech Slets.
