SOKOL POSTCARDS
and Poster Stamps
XI. Slet 1948
RUDÉ PRÁVO Advertising Stamps
(Click on any image to view an enlarged version)
Štefan Šuták, of Chomutov, Czech Republic -
linguist, Sokol maven, and poster stamp collector extraordinaire -
sent me the images
below, of his collection of these advertising labels issued by
Rudé Právo, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia
(the equivalent of Pravda in the USSR). They were distributed as attachments/inclusions in the
newspaper during the 1948 XI. Slet, and thru many shops and stores.
Each label is about 48 x 30 mm, or 1.9 x 1.2 inches.
Each stamp has advertising for some business or product,
and has the message "XI. SLETU ZDAR! - RUDÉ PRÁVO."
"SLETU ZDAR!" means something like "Happy Slet!"
And note the guy in Sokol exercise attire demonstrating his exercise routine.
You can stay in shape just by collecting these stamps!
220 different labels were issued, during June and July of 1948, and Štefan
recently (April, 2022) completed his collection - images below!
The stamps were part of a contest, "Velká sletová soutěž"
("The Great Slet's Competition"), which ran from June 1 to August 31, 1948.
Initially the 220 advertising labels were distributed free of charge to customers in company
stores and newsstands. People had to collect at least 110 of them, and then arrange them in
the proper order (showing the men's set of exercises at the Sokol rally),
according to hints or clues printed in the daily newspaper "Rudé Právo."
Special generic stamps called
"competition aces"
were printed in the publisher's newspapers and magazines
and could be used to fill in missing items in the collection, but only within certain limits.
A total of 800,000 CZK was awarded in prizes, with a first prize of a house worth 500,000 CZK.
The announcement of the results was delayed due to the funeral of former president Dr. Edvard Bene.
Thanks to Štefan and
this web page
for this explanation of the contest.
